MARYSVILLE — Marysville-Pilchuck earned a much-needed Wesco North girls soccer win Thursday, defeating Monroe 3-0.

Entering the game, the Tomahawks (7-4 league, 8-4 overall) were on the outside looking in. They sat in fourth place behind division-leading Snohomish, second place Lake Stevens and Monroe with 16 total points. After beating Monroe (6-5, 7-5), they move into a tie with the Bearcats for the division’s third and final 4A District 1 playoff spot.

Senior forward Madison Schoonover helped the Tomahawks get off to a positive start, scoring in the eighth minute. Her shot from about 25-yards out along the right sideline took one bounce and deflected off a Monroe defender and into the back of the net. With just a couple weeks remaining in the regular season, it was exactly the start that Marysville needed.

The Tomahawks capitalized on their aggressive play yet again when Becka Lentz converted a penalty kick in the 12th minute after she was taken down in the box.

“Our game plan was to be defensively strong because Monroe is a strong squad,” said M-P head coach Gary Riozzi. “Once we got the ball, we wanted to apply pressure.”

Lentz added another goal in the 52nd minute to cap the scoring for the Tomahawks. The 3-0 score held up as keeper Lauiren Schoonover kept Monroe off the scoreboard.
