UNIVERSITY PLACE — Curtis High senior running back Tyler Montague made a splash in his playoff debut on Friday night.
The 5-foot-8, 175-pound senior rushed for 163 yards and three touchdowns as the second-ranked Vikings defeated Lake Stevens, 31-14, in a Class 4A quad-district playoff game at Curtis High.
Curtis (10-0) piled up 340 yards on the ground as a team, taking advantage of the absence of Lake Stevens’ leading tackler Korey Young.
After turning the ball over on their opening possession, Curtis got things together, putting together a nine-play, 74-yard drive. Montague capped it off with a 6-yard touchdown run with 5 minutes, 18 seconds left in the first quarter.
Leading 10-6 with less than two minutes left in the half, Curtis faced a fourth-and-four from their own 43 yard line. Rahmel Dockery came in to punt, but he took the snap, made a couple of cuts, and took the ball 43 yards to the 15. Montague ran it in for his second touchdown of the half on the very next play.
Curtis ran up 222 yards of total offense in the first half in jumping out to a 17-6 lead.
The Vikings from University Place added another score on a 1-yard touchdown run by quarterback Tyler Jamison, taking a 24-6 lead after three. Montague added another touchdown midway through the fourth — a 39-yard run — to put the game away.
The lone negative was Curtis lost two fumbles and committed a host of penalities on defense.
Lake Stevens finished the season 7-3.
