MUKILTEO — Only five candidates remain in the running to become Mukilteo’s next top cop.

“The search for the chief is going well,” Mukilteo Mayor Joe Marine said Wednesday.

Mukilteo city leaders have narrowed the applications down from 19 last month. They enlisted the help of a panel of local law enforcement officials.

The five candidates are expected to participate in interviews Nov. 30. From there, two or three candidates will have additional interviews with Marine and City Administrator Joe Hannan.

They hope to present a final candidate to the city council in the next few weeks, but they won’t rush if it takes longer, Marine said.

The current chief, Mike Murphy, has said he plans to retire by the end of December or early January. Cmdr. Chuck Macklin has been running the department while Murphy is on medical leave.
