Arlington: Library plans lots of activities
The Arlington Library, 135 N. Washington Ave., and the Friends of the Library are offering a “Winter Extravaganza” of programs during the Christmas holiday break.
All ages are invited to participate in a build-it-and-eat-it gingerbread house event set for 2 p.m. Monday.
Teens are invited to make felted bags out of old sweaters at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday or learn the basics of knitting at 3 p.m. Wednesday. A Cranium game challenge is set for 3 p.m. Dec. 28.
For children and their families, a “Winter Wonderland” story time is set for 7 p.m. Dec. 27. Lean about sharks during a science presentation at 11 a.m. Dec. 28. And use your old Christmas cards or library cardstock to make 20-sided, 3-D paper sculptures at a session set for 2 p.m. Dec. 30.

Darrington: Santa collecting food today
Santa and the Snohomish County sheriff’s deputies who work in Darrington plan to pack a couple of patrol trucks full of food early Friday afternoon.
Santa, Darrington High School’s leadership class and members of the Sauk-Suiattle Tribe plan to assist police starting at 1 p.m. at Town Hall. The team will work its way through town, stopping to gather donations of nonperishable food items, new toys and new clothing. People also can drop off donations at the Darrington police station.
The donations are headed to the Smokey Point complex of Naval Station Everett for distribution to military families associated with Naval Station Everett and Naval Air Station Whidbey Island.
Granite Falls: Council adopts 2011 budget
The Granite Falls City Council adopted a balanced 2011 budget.
The council voted 4-1 to approve the $9.1 million budget at a meeting Wednesday night. The budget includes a $5 storm drainage rate increase, making the monthly charge $9 for single family residences.
A 12 percent utility tax on water and sewer also was approved at the meeting. The 3 percent increase is taken out of the revenue the city collects from water and sewer bills and put into the general fund.
Stanwood: Prestigious designations awarded
Darin Reid, Stanwood deputy fire chief and emergency medical services administrator, has completed a process that awards him the professional designation of chief fire officer and chief medical officer.
Reid is one of only 722 CFOs worldwide and is one of only 68 CMOs nationwide to receive the prestigious designations.
Reid has been a member of the Stanwood Camano Fire Department for more than six years. He lives on Camano Island.
Warm Beach: Food drive successful
Firefighters here teamed up with Resilience Fitness employees and baristas from Starbucks in Stanwood to collect 2,500 pounds of food and 750 new toys for Christmas charities this year.
The donations will go to food banks and Christmas Houses in Stanwood and Arlington, said Christian Davis, a battalion chief with North County Regional Fire Authority.
“Everyone was truly touched to see such an outpouring of support from the community,” Davis said.
