MARYSVILLE — Marysville-Pilchuck jumped out to a 17-point lead by halftime, aided by senior Dacia Heckendorf’s 10 first-quarter points, and cruised to a 54-40 nonleague win over Shorecrest in a girls basketball game Monday night at Marysville-Pilchuck High School.

Along with Heckendorf’s 10 early points, the Tomahawks (5-2 overall) used a full-court pressure defense to cause the Scots (1-5) to turn the ball over a handful of times. Senior Morgan Martinis, a 5-foot-6 guard, pitched in 10 of her game-high 17 points in the first half as M-P built a 32-15 lead.

Shorecrest made some adjustments, outscoring the Tomahawks 25-22 in the second half, but the damage was done.

Freshmen Charlee Pilon (five points) and Amanda Klep (two points) saw quality time off the bench for M-P, Tomahawks head coach Julie Martin said.

The game also allowed the Marsyville-Pilchuck to work on some in-game tactics in preparation for tomorrow’s Wesco North showdown on the road at undefeated league-leader Lake Stevens.

“We actually worked on a lot of the little things that we needed to work on defensively,” Martin said. “Hopefully it will lead into something great for Wednesday.”

Heckendorf finished with 16 points for M-P while Hannah Watson and Emily Enberg add six points each in the win.

Janie Uppinghouse, a 5-9 junior, led Shorecrest with 12 points and 5-9 junior Shannon Schachle added 11 points for the Scots.

Wednesday, the Tomahawks face off against a similarly-built Lake Stevens team. The unbeaten Vikings, much like M-P, don’t feature much size, but rather use strong pressure defense and a well-rounded offensive attack to out-pace opponents.

“We probably match up with them the best out of anybody (in the league),” Martin said.
