Monroe beats Newport, 57-50

TUKWILA — Monroe lost a double-digit lead in the third quarter but Ashley Alexander scored six points in the fourth quarter to support another outstanding game by Suzanna Ohlsen as the Bearcats defeated Newport 57-50 at the “I Have a Dream” girls basketball event Monday at Foster High School.
The event featured six girls basketball games.
The win was the fourth in a row and sixth in the last seven games for Monroe (8-6), the only loss coming against No. 6 Edmonds-Woodway. It also snapped a four-game win streak by Newport (6-7).
Monroe led by 10 points in the third quarter before Newport rallied to tie the game at 41. It stayed close through the rest of the game, with the Bearcats leading by as few as 3 late in the fourth quarter before pulling away.
Ohlsen, a 5-foot-8 senior, had 24 points and is averaging 21.9 points a game this season. She’s scored at least 20 points nine times and over the last four games is averaging 26.5. Bianca O’Hara added 10 points and the senior guard is averaging 13.2 during her team’s four-game win streak. Kierra Wilkins had six rebounds and eight steals to go along with six points for Monroe.
Chanel Cambronero led Newport with 10 points.
