Arlington: Relay for Life open house
Arlington Relay For Life begins its second year of activities with an open house from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Stillaguamish Senior Center, 18308 Smokey Point Blvd.
Organizers hope to get individuals involved in the 2011 relay, offer information about the American Cancer Society and register teams and individuals for the relay, set for June 4 and 5 at Arlington High School.
Arlington Mayor Margaret Larson and American Cancer Society representatives plan to speak. Special awards, a slide show of last year’s relay and entertainment are planned.
The 2010 Arlington Relay for Life was the top first-year fundraiser in the nation.

Darrington: School Board delays action
School Board President Julie Kuntz said the board’s meeting agenda this week will not include an announcement about the future of Superintendent Larry Johnson. The meeting is set for 7 p.m. Thursday in the high school library, 1085 Fir St.
Johnson has been on paid administrative leave while the district conducted an investigation to determine if he had lived up to the responsibilities of his contract following the death of a School District colleague.
The school’s investigation was separate from the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office investigation that concluded in late November. Sheriff’s investigators found no evidence of foul play in the death of Myra Lewis, the school district’s finance director.
Marysville: Residents can make sandbags
People can make their own sandbags with materials supplied by the city.
The sand and bags can be picked up at the Public Works Building at 80 Columbia Ave. in downtown Marysville during regular business hours of 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., or any time at the city’s materials storage site at 100th Street NE and 67th Avenue NE.
Residents fill the bags themselves and need to bring a shovel. Sandbags can be used to protect against flooding.

Learn how to start a small business
People interested in starting their own small business can sign up for a workshop on the topic offered through Marysville Parks and Recreation.
The workshop, scheduled from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Jan. 26 at the Ken Baxter Community Center, costs $25. Information about good business practices, accounting, business licenses, nonprofits and more are part of the class.
