Searching for my lost shaker of salt: The federal government’s dietary guidelines, which are updated every five years, say most Americans need to cut their intake of salt significantly, particularly those who are older than 50 or have high blood pressure, diabetes or kidney disease.
Here’s an easy test to determine if you need to cut the amount of salt you eat: If cattle and other farm animals turn up their noses at a salt lick for a couple licks of you, see your doctor.

Bordering on greatness: Bellingham’s Western Washington University has launched a new marketing campaign with the slogan: “Active Minds Changing Lives.”
It replaces the old slogan: “We’re less than an hour from Canada and its lower drinking age.”

Don’t know much about history: On this day in 1920, Canada’s Royal North West Mounted Police and the Dominion Police joined forces to form the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
But it would take another five years for Canadian law enforcement officials to determine that the Mounties could do their job more effectively when the horses were mounted rather than the police.
