Plants of Merit: Callicarpa americana

Published 12:01 am Thursday, February 3, 2011

WHAT: Callicarpa americana, also known as beautyberry, is a deciduous shrub known for its bright, shining lavender-fuchsia berries that form in clusters in the winter and flowers in the spring.

Native to the Southeast and Midwest, its roots, leaves and branches were used for medicinal purposes by American Indian tribes.

Butterflies and birds are attracted to the bright purple berries.

SUN OR SHADE: In most climates this shrub needs shade, but in our maritime climate it does very well in sun.

It is best positioned in the garden where it can be enjoyed from inside in the winter as it provides great off-season color.

It requires very little maintenance but does need some summer watering.

SIZE: It grows to 6 feet tall and wide in this region, sometimes larger.

SEE IT: You can find this plant on the back side of the conifer garden the Evergreen Arboretum & Gardens, 145 Alverson Blvd., Everett, www.evergreenarboretum.com.
