‘Haul’ videos: Bizarrely engaging

Published 1:33 pm Wednesday, February 9, 2011

Have you been shopping lately?

Did you come home with just, like, a fantastic haul?

Well, why not get our your stuff, all of it, take it directly from the bag, turn your video camera on yourself and talk, talk, talk, excitedly and in great detail about it all?

Take it very seriously, but have fun, too. Then upload the video on YouTube.

There.

You’ve made it, your very own YouTube “haul” video, a bona fide, actual trend.

Apparently all the kids are doing haul videos these days — Christmas hauls, birthday hauls, Black Friday hauls, Forever 21 hauls and many other bizarrely mundane show-and-tell videos.

Though minimum age requirement appears to be 12 or 13, anyone can do them, of course.

I tell you this: If you’re in just the right mood, these strangely personal videos can be oddly fascinating, despite their incredible boringness.

This seems perfect in our age of Facebook posts about our every meal, tummyaches, recent purchases and other random musings our “friends” just barely care about, if at all, right?

Most notable in the YouTube “haul” cannon is, perhaps, this nerdy but loveable kid with the Yankee Candle Co. haul, embedded below for your viewing pleasure:
