MOUNTLAKE TERRACE — With one swing of the bat, John Boone made sure Meadowdale kept its streak of consecutive state playoff appearances alive.

With one out in the bottom of the eighth, Boone laced the game-winning single down the left field line, scoring teammate Riley Bykonen and letting Meadowdale celebrate a 5-4 walkoff win over Glacier Peak in a 3A District 1 semifinal. The win extended the Mavericks state streak to five years in a row, according to head coach Bill Hummel, and put them in the district championship game against Shorewood (20-2).

“It’s big,” Hummel said of his team’s clutch victory. “We got a nice draw in this tournament after we really had an up and down season, our record kind of shows that. But we really put all of our focus on playing well at this time of the year and so far we have.”

One of the main areas of focus for Hummel and his team coming into the postseason, was the defense. According to Hummel, the Mavericks committed twice as many errors as its opponents during the course of the season. After two games in the playoffs? None.

The game against the Grizzlies was a back and forth affair. Every time Glacier Peak would score, Meadowdale came right back to match. Tim Peruchini belted a two-run homer in the first inning to put the Grizzlies ahead until the Mavericks answered in the bottom half of the inning with two runs. It was then 3-3 after three and 4-4 after four, with a sacrifice fly from Meadowdale’s Sam Herzer tying the score.

Herzer came on in relief of Meadowdale starter Torin Dooley in the fifth inning and pitched four shutout innings while scattering five hits.

Chris Osborne batted 1-for-3 with a score-tying solo homer in the third for Meadowdale.
