Online learning can be fun

Just in case the world didn’t end over the weekend, let’s review the headlines. (If it did end, we can say: How long was the Legislature’s special session? It was so long it dragged on to the end of time.):

•”Could the Internet spell the end of snow days?”: That seems a fair, maybe even poetic, turn of events for the Tech Generation. It can’t all be fun and games. Or maybe it can…

Playboy puts all 57 years of its magazines online“: Let it snow! Let it snow! Let it snow! “Oh, I’m just doing my, uh, comparative literature homework, Mom. You just keep reminiscing about your unwired snow days.”

Woman removed from train after talking too loudly; http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20110518/ts_alt_afp/usrailoffbeat;_ylt=AgWc3dSKbcx1LPDGrLe82.FbPcB_“: The young woman was forcibly removed after gabbing loudly on her cell phone despite passenger complaints during a 15-hour train trip between Los Angeles and Seattle.

Where is a modern-day Jesse James type gang to commandeer trains, planes and other public spaces and round up all the cell phones?

•”Cute rodent species surfaces after 113 years”: It immediately updated its Facebook status to “single and stinky but cute” and registered the domain name “red-crested tree rat.org” and Tweeted “Take that, you feared ugly urban rats.”

Escorts: Utah law makes acting sexy illegal“: Two escort services have sued to block the solicitation law, saying it’s too broad and could lead to the arrest of escorts and strippers, and gives police too much discretion to determine whether a person is soliciting sex or simply acting sexy.

The law’s backers say if there’s ever uncertainty, the state will post a video of the person in question and conduct a “Utah’s Got Talent” type poll and let the people decide if the person in question was soliciting sex or simply acting sexy.

•”TNT working on new cop series set in the Northwest“: The network described the series about “a family of cops who uncover the mystical and often crime-ridden world of a small town where things aren’t as they appear.”

How spooky. The name of the show is rising out of the mysterious shadowy mist. What is it?

“Twin Peaks.”

•”Tenacious dog escapes Oregon veterinarian office“: A German shepherd named Jack, recovering from the flu, managed to pull open his kennel, trip the dead bolt on the clinic’s back door and pull down the handle to get outside, the Medford Mail Tribune reported. He set off three motion-detector alarms and ripped open four bags of food, leaving his big paw prints all over the floor.

He then stole a plane and crash-landed in Portland.
