On with the show

Curse of the Spider-Man: Plagued by technical problems and injuries and heavily panned before its official opening, a completely reworked “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark” opened Tuesday on Broadway.

Among the changes to the reworked rock musical about the web-slinging superhero: The entire cast is now dressed like cats, and U2’s Bono and The Edge have written new music with lyrics based on T.S. Eliot’s “Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats.”

Name calling: The Seattle Mariners, having battled up from the basement of the American League West earlier this season, lost a little of that ground Tuesday night, falling to the Los Angeles Angels, 4-0.

Noting the Mariners’ fondness for calling each other by nicknames, we’d like to see Seattle manager “Wedgie” submit the following lineup for an upcoming game: Figgy, Miggy, Peggy, Smokie, Guttie, Gimme, Jackie, Vargie and Ichi.

Trust me on the sunscreen: By next summer, the federal Food and Drug Administration will begin enforcing a new rule intended to help consumers better understand the SPF numbers and other claims on sunscreen products. “Broad spectrum” will appear on products offering acceptable protection against ultraviolet A and B rays.

For consumers in the Pacific Northwest, the FDA will require labels to provide explanations for the term “sun.”
