Dueling festivals

The Lavender Hill Gang Wars: If you’re a lavender fan, now you have two festivals in the Olympic Peninsula town of Sequim to indulge your love of the fragrant purple flower. Philosophical differences among members of the lavender growers association led to a split and competing events.

We’re not sure what “philosophical differences” could arise over lavender, but we suggest they settle the matter with sachets at 10 paces.

Take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints: Because of problems with aggressive mountain goats, hikers in the Olympic National Park are being asked not to urinate along the trail, which provides the goats with a source of salt.

Park rangers aren’t suggesting you pack out what you pack in, but we note that the camp store has laid in a large supply of Depends.

Pack up your hacky-sacks: About 20,000 members of the counter-culture Rainbow Family left the Skookum Meadows of the Gifford Pinchot National Forest in southwest Washington following their week-long gathering.

As if sensing something on the wind, the entire population of Olympic National Park mountain goats began a mass migration south to the abandoned hippie grounds.
