Of note, No. 1 goaltender Kent Simpson is not participating after recently having his knee scoped. Simpson was doing light skating on his own between sessions. Also, 17-year-old forward prospect Trent Lofthouse suffered a broken wrist in the day’s first scrimmage.

Now for some quick hitters on things that were noteworthy to me:

– Center Ty Mappin, Everett’s first-round pick in this year’s bantam draft, needed one period to warm up, but was pretty special after that. He scored four goals on the day, double anyone else, and he held up fine when moved onto the second line to play against older opposition. You can see why he was worthy of the seventh pick overall.

– Everett’s new Euros, Slovakian winger Vladimir Dolnik and German defenseman Dominik Bittner, both made a pretty good first impression. Dolnik worked hard and displayed a willingness to shoot. Bittner seemed solid without doing anything flashy.

– The GREEN team is 2-0 largely because of goaltending. Luke Siemens looked in midseason form, and invited 15-year-old Nicolas Bruyere impressed.

– Among the returning players, I thought winger Jari Erricson had a good day as he was tenacious. Defenseman Ryan Murray was his usual self.

– Of the newcomers looking to make the team, 16-year-old winger Michael Bell was interesting. He seemed well matched on a line with Erricson as they have similar styles. Seventeen-year-old winger Carson Samoridny held his own on a line with veterans Tyler Maxwell and Manraj Hayer.

– I don’t know what 17-year-old winger Josh Kluck, here on a tryout, was saying or doing out there, but he pretty much had everyone trying to get a piece of him. He’s a smaller guy, but that didn’t prevent him from amassing 130 penalty minutes in 49 games in the AJHL last season as a 16-year-old rookie.
