Cascade blanks E-W

EVERETT — Coming off a nonconference win over Bellingham earlier in the week, the Cascade girls soccer team was able to do it against a league rival by earning its second 1-0 shutout in a row, this time dispatching Edmonds-Woodway on Thursday night.

“We have been talking about letting our performance dictate our results,” Cascade head coach Jamie Gay said. “We knew that our performance would have to be very high to compete (tonight).”

Junior co-captain Sarah Jenkins found the back of the net for the game’s lone goal in the 25th minute. Jenkins fought through a crowd of players to secure a through ball and deposited a shot just over the head of the Warriors’ keeper from about 18 feet out. It would hold up as the Bruins defense, led by another junior co-captain, centerback Emily Nelson, kept Edmonds-Woodway (0-1 in league, 0-1-1 overall) from generating any decent looks inside the Cascade box.

“Our defensive line did a great job of not letting (Edmonds-Woodway) get behind for open shots in the box,” said Gay. “They took some good shots from distance but most of them missed wide of the goal.”

Bruins keeper Denae Weigelt will look to make it three consecutive shutouts when Cascade (1-0, 2-0) faces Jackson Tuesday.
