KENT — With a healthy KeiVarae Russell leading the way, Mariner hoped to make a deep run in the 4A state playoffs to send the senior out right.
Unfortunately those plans never got off the ground — neither did the Marauders’ vaunted rushing attack — as Mariner ran into a buzzsaw in the form of Kentlake.
The Falcons, behind three rushing touchdowns by Tanner Lucas and two more from Steffin Church, dominated the line of scrimmage in a 49-7 victory, Friday.
Kentlake spotted Mariner a 7-0 lead on a Keelan Degamo 35-yard fumble return in the first quarter but weren’t in a giving mood the rest of the way. Instead, Kentlake answered the turnover with 49 unanswered points.
“They were better than us in every phase,” Mariner head coach John Ondriezek said flatly. “They dominated us offensively and defensively. (Kentlake) just controlled the line of scrimmage.
“They were physical, fast and didn’t let us get our offense going.”
Russell was held to just 57 yards on 17 carries in his final high school game.
