EVERETT — The Cascade boys basketball used surges in the second and fourth quarters to outscore rival Everett 49-20 on the way to a 80-53 victory in the nightcap of Friday’s annual Bru-Gull Fest celebration of the cross-town basketball rivalry.

“We wore them down a little bit in the fourth quarter,” Cascade coach Dan Horanday said.

Everett’s Unikque Thibou, who had 13 points on the night, trimmed the Cascade lead to 55-44 at the end of the third quarter, but the Seagulls had nothing left in the tank during a 25-9 fourth quarter.

Cascade’s inside players were the difference on offense led by junior Steven Gallardo who finished with a game-high 29 points. In the Bruins loss to Eastlake Thursday it was KJ Brady who scored over 20 points. Hornaday thinks they are the strength of his team.

“Our posts, they’re two-year startes,” Hornaday said. “They really get us going.”

Brady had five points against the Seagulls but guard DuSean Shankle chipped in 19 including three makes from long range.

As easy as the offense was at times, Cascade’s defense is what rattled Everett in the even numbered quarters and that side of the ball will determine how far the Bruins (2-1) go this year.

“Everything we do is based on defense,” Hornaday said. “I think we came out and played very good defensively.”

Everett (0-2) was paced on offense by Jace Chacon who poured in 20 points.

Though league play hasn’t begun for either team, the Bruins feel they are ready to challenge for the Wesco south. League games begin next week for Cascade with favorite Kamiak.

As far as Hornaday is concerned the Knights (2-0) are the class of the Wesco South, but his team hopes to knock them off their perch.

“We’ve got a really tough game against Kamiak,” Hornaday said. “They are the top in our league.”
