SHORELINE — Shorecrest’s Onyie Chibuogwu hit a contested 8-foot jumper as the buzzer sounded and the Scots beat Lynnwood 50-48 to remain undefeated and take over first place in the Wesco 3A.
Trailing 48-47, Lynnwood’s Meghan Cross hit the second of two free throws to set up Chibuogwu’s game-winning shot that handed the Royals their first league loss.
Shorecrest head coach Dori Monson said he decided against calling a timeout and trusted his players to push the ball upcourt and get off a good shot. “It was a little bit of a scramble, but we got the ball to Chibuogwu and she hit a difficult shot,” Monson said.
Cross and Arsenia Ivanov both finished with 11 points to pace the Royals, who knocked in 10 3-pointers in the game — two from Cross and three from Ivanov.
Shorecrest’s Bri Lasconia had 15 points and Chibuogwu was 9-for-11 from the field for a game-high 18 points and she also collected eight rebounds.
Monson said he was happy with the win, but believes Shorecrest needs to keep improving.
“There are a lot of tough games in Wesco 3A and we’re going to have to continue to get better if we’re going to keep winning,” Monson said.
