Prep girls basketball: Shorecrest 47, Marysville Pilchuck 44

SHORELINE — Shorecrest overcame 20 first-half turnovers — and a 10-0 run by Marysville Pilchuck to start the game — to remain undefeated with a 47-44 nonleague girls basketball win on Saturday.
The Scots trailed the whole game, until about two minutes left, when India Matheson (20 points, nine rebounds, five steals) and Brianne Lasconia (15 points, six steals, five rebounds) finalized the Shorecrest comeback.
“They willed us to the win,” said Scots head coach Dori Monson. “They just took over the game.”
Matheson made five-of-six free throws in the 4th quarter. Nine of the Scots 11 points in the quarter came from the free throw line.
The Tomahawks jumped out to an early lead thanks to Amanda Klep’s 14 points — 12 of which came in the first half — and Charlee Pilon, who scored all seven of her points in the first quarter.
With 30 seconds left, Lasconia stole the ball at midcourt and was immediately fouled, she made one-of-two free throws to give Shorecrest the lead for good.
“We were able to squeak it out,” Monson said, noting that the Scots turned the ball over seven times in the second half, which is still “uncharacteristic.”
Monson was excited to get a victory, saying Marysville Pilchuck is always a tough team to play.
“I have so much respect for the job (Tomahawks head coach) Julie Martin does coaching that team,” he said. “I know that every time we play Marysville they’re going to be well coached and disciplined. They’re going to play their hearts out.”
