SHORELINE — Madeline Kasper scored five of her team’s 11 points in the overtime period as Edmonds-Woodway beat Shorecrest 57-52 in a nonconference game at Shorecrest High School Tuesday night.

Kasper scored a game-high 31 points and hit five 3-pointers as the Warriors overcame a slow start to hand the Scots their first loss of the season.

“Madeline Kasper had one of the greatest games from a high school girl I’ve ever witnessed,” said Shorecrest head coach Dori Monson. “She just took over the game.”

Despite missing two of their best post players — Sidney Eck and Seyi Olajoyegbe both fouled out near the end of regulation — the Warriors did a good job of drawing fouls in the overtime period and hitting their free throws to ice the win. Kasper was 5-for-6 from the free-throw line in overtime.

Early on it looked like the Class 3A Scots might run away from the 4A Warriors, outscoring E-W 15-8 in the first quarter. But E-W scored the first seven points of the second quarter to draw even and the game was close from that point on.

Bri Lasconia scored 19 points to pace Shorecrest and India Matheson added 13 points and 15 rebounds.

But the player of the game was Kasper, who also watched her sister Natalie score 10 points for E-W.

“We were trying different players on (Madeline) but we just didn’t have much success against her,” Monson said. “She was running the point, shaking loose for screens. And she’s so quick, you have to respect the dribble penetration.”

Monson said he hopes his team can take something from its first loss.

“I told the girls after the game that if we’re going to lose we’re glad it happened in a non-league game. I hope that it re-focuses us and lets us know what it takes against this level of competition.”
