Poetry slam Tuesday

Stanwood High School plans its annual Poetry Out Loud competition from 8:40 to 10:40 a.m. Tuesday at the school’s performing arts center.

A record 24 participants are signed up to compete in this entertaining event.

Poetry Out Loud is a national competition in which students memorize and recite poems.

Participants who win at the school level go on to regional competition.

Stanwood has won the regionals for the past two years. Regional winners then compete at a state competition and that winner goes on to compete in Washington, D.C., for a sizable scholarship.

Mardi Gras Auction for Japanese Gulch: Get your tickets now for a special Mardi Gras event to benefit the Japanese Gulch Group.

Enjoy a Cajun dinner catered by Chef Ryan Strum, formerly of Alligator Soul, and live music from Mukilteo’s Stephen Grace Band. The event also features a silent auction and a live auction.

The Mardi Gras Auction will be held from 6 to 11 p.m. Feb. 3 at Rosehill Community Center, 304 Lincoln Ave., Mukilteo.

Tickets are $60 for RSVPs made before Jan. 15; $65 after.

Meal times change: Starting Jan. 25, community meals at the Everett First Covenant Church will be served from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesdays.
