Monroe balanced as Bearcats knock off South No.1 Jackson

MONROE —Led by a balanced scoring attack Monroe earned a home victory over the Wesco South top seed Jackson Timberwolves on Thursday night. Monroe won by a narrow 54-52 margin in Wesco crossover play in what many would consider an upset. Heading into the game the Timberwolves’ had just one loss in league, whereas Monroe already had four losses in league play.
“I wouldn’t call it an upset,” Monroe coach Nick Wold said. “I mean we prep and watch film like any other team. It was honestly a game we expected to win.”
As he has so many times before this season, Jackson’s sophomore forward, Jason Todd led all scorers with 28, including 11 from the free-throw line. Coach Wold explained further, “He (Todd) is an incredibly versatile player, and it was obvious how aggressive he was tonight.”
Wold also complimented the play of his senior guard Terrance Day, “(Day) did a fantastic job on defense, primarily on (Dan) Kingma.” Day’s defense was able to hold Kingma to just two points on the night.
Along with his play on defense, Day led the Bearcats with 17 points and six rebounds.
Wold was sure to mention the shooting of senior guard, Tony Peloquin as well. Peloquin shot seven of 10 from the field to go along with his 14 points, 10 of which were scored in the first half.
