Prep boys soccer: Shorewood 3, Mountlake Terrace 0

SHORELINE — Dawda Dibba made Shorewood head coach Nate Davis look like a genius.
Despite maintaining the majority of possession, the Thunderbirds had not broken the Mountlake Terrace defense when Davis subbed in Dibba with approximately 30 minutes left to play. Thirty seconds after stepping on to the pitch, Dibba converted a chance set up by Taj McChesney and Shorewood would go on to score two more goals in the next 10 minutes to wrap up the win.
Davis credited a tactical adjustment for the second half offense.
“In the second half, we changed our game plan,” Davis said. “Instead of having our outside midfielders crossing into the box, we wanted them to take it directly in.”
Mountlake Terrace’s best chance of the match came just 2 minutes after Dibba’s goal. The Hawks hit the bar on a shot and created chaos on the ensuing corner when the Shorewood defense could not clear the ball.
But the Thunderbirds survived those efforts and added two insurance scores in the 66th and 71st minute.
Daniel Han got on the end of a Matthew Pettersen corner to head home the second goal and McChesney finished off a scramble in front of the Terrace net for the third.
While still early in the season, Davis is pleased with how his team is coming together.
“We’re getting the hang of it, our defense is getting used to play with each other,” Davis said. “We’re not technically gifted, but there’s heart and fight in this team. Just looking at the other early season scores, I think the league title is up for grabs.”
