STANWOOD — Strong defense, depth, and three touchdown passes from Drew Wright were all it took to get coach Doug Trainor his first victory as head coach of the Stanwood Spartans 19-8 over Mountlake Terrace.

It took the Spartans until the second quarter to get on the board, but according to Trainor his team’s condition allowed them to play the long game. “We struggled offensively early, but you know, our kids are in pretty good shape. … We kind of took advantage of maybe having more numbers, playing more guys, being a little fresher as the game wore on,” said Trainor.

The performance by Stanwood’s defense, not giving up any points until the fourth quarter, meant that Wright and the offense had all the time in the world. “They were shut off until we put the backups in,” said Trainor. “We were really happy with the defensive effort.” Specifically, a play by Jake Campbell to end the first half that mean the Spartans entered the locker room 7-0 instead of 7-7. After a 15 yard completion Campbell “met the kid at the one-yard-line, stood him up and dropped him back. … It was a huge play,” said Trainor.

Nick Lewis also stood out at middle linebacker. “(Lewis) was all over the field. He had a lot of big plays and big hits behind the line of scrimmage.”

Devante Downs lead Mountlake Terrace with 18 carries for 106 yards and one touchdown. Beau Kennedy also spent time at QB for the Hawks hitting 9 of 19 passes for 91 yards and rushing 10 times for 78 yards.
