3A State Volleyball: Glacier Peak shocks Mount Si, loses to Southridge

LACEY — The Glacier Peak volleyball team seemingly got the hard part of its 3A state tournament out of the way early. Facing third-ranked Mount Si in the opener, Glacier Peak swept aside the Wildcats 25-17, 25-22, 25-21 and the Grizzlies looked like they were primed to make a deep run. But No. 8 Southridge dashed Glacier Peak’s hopes of making the semifinals with 25-19, 22-25, 25-23, 25-22 win.
“Southridge had a quick offense that went down the middle and it took us a game to adjust,” said Grizzlies head coach Christopher Pratt. “We battled back to take the second, the third was a toss-up and we didn’t recover in the fourth.”
Ruby Mensing had 18 kills and 30 digs and Maddie Ober recorded 19 kills and 15 digs in the loss.
Setter McKenzie Wilkinson had two strong matches with 38 assists against Southridge and 31 versus Mount Si. In the first match, Pratt liked the how the offense was spread around, instead of being too dependent on Mensing and Ober, and hoped Glacier Peak could get back to that to conclude the tournament.
“I’d like to see us spread it around tomorrow,” said Pratt. “It’s tougher for the other team if we’re balanced offensively.”
Glacier Peak is still alive in the consolation bracket and plays Columbia River at 9:45 a.m. today. A win would ensure the Grizzlies at least a sixth place finish.
