DeWayne’s two-run double leads Meadowdale softball over Royals

LYNNWOOD — Almost every sport can be described as a game of inches at some point or another and the Meadowdale softball team’s 5-3 victory over Lynnwood was certainly that.

The game was tied at 3-3 going into the seventh with the Mavs threatening with two runners on. Tiffany DeWayne came to the plate and hit a shot that passed just over the tip of center fielder Jasmine Edwards’ glove for an eventual two-run double.

“It was a double all the way, but it would have been an amazing catch,” said Lynnwood head coach Matt Rockne.

The two runs were enough and the 3A Mavericks continued their nonleague tour through Wesco 4A with another win. Meadowdale beat Edmonds-Woodway 7-2 on Tuesday and now plays Kamiak, Cascade, Jackson and 4A North Snohomish before starting its league season.

Alyssa Reuble was solid on the mound for Meadowdale, allowing only one base runner in the first three innings. The Royals got one back in the fourth when Deseree Graham hit a lead-off single and was knocked in two batters later by a Jessica Gott double that got between the left and center fielders.

Lynnwood scored two more in the sixth. Graham led off with a walk, followed by an Erica Gott single. Two batters later Katie Eno hit a two-RBI single to tie the game.

Despite the loss, Rockne feels good about his team. “Meadowdale is a strong team. We were probably pretty evenly matched today. A ball an inch or two closer to a fielder and we might still be playing out there,” Rockne said.

Besides DeWayne, Haili Taylor, Rebecca Wright and Reuble had doubles for the Mavericks.
