‘Walk for Loch’ helps family of boy needing surgery

MONROE — A fundraising walk and run is scheduled for Saturday at Lake Tye Park to help the family of a 3-year-old boy who will soon travel to Florida for surgery.
Loch Carswell, the son of Joshua and Cheri Carswell, was born with congenital femoral deficiency, which causes his right leg to be significantly shorter than his left.
Faced with options of amputation or leg-lengthening surgeries, the Monroe parents chose the latter. Loch will have three operations to lengthen his leg. The first is scheduled for July 2. The next two surgeries will be performed when he is 8 and 12 years old. An operation in 2011 repaired his hip joint.
Loch is being treated by Dr. Dror Paley. He will undergo the surgeries at the Paley Advanced Limb Lengthening Institute at St. Mary’s Hospital in West Palm Beach, Fla. With each surgery, Cheri Carswell will spend four months in Florida with her son.
The “Walk for Loch 5K” is sponsored by Cascade Community Church. Registration starts at 9 a.m. Saturday, and the walk around the lake begins at 10 a.m. The registration fee is $25, and all proceeds will be donated to Loch Carswell’s Medical Fund through Cascade Community Church. Lake Tye Park is at 14964 Fryelands Blvd. in Monroe.
