Back to regularly scheduled programming

You may have noticed that blog posts have been scarce the past month. That’s because I was out a while with the flu for a while, then spent the past week on vacation. Well, I’m not quite back to 100-percent healthy just yet, but I am back to full functionality, meaning I can be a little more active online.

And it’s just about time for that, too, as August is when things get started again for the Tips. Training camp officially begins on Aug. 22, which is just 17 days away. I always marvel every year about how a sport that’s played on ice always gets started when it’s 75 degrees and sunny outside.

Training camp will follow it’s familiar pattern, with on-ice sessions on the Thursday, Friday and Saturday, followed by the Green vs. Grey game on Sunday. This year the on-ice sessions are returning to the main rink at Comcast Arena, after detouring to the community rink last year. I have yet to find out whether the format is being tweaked with Kevin Constantine returning as head coach.

It’s always interesting to see who shows up at training camp and who doesn’t. One player we know is coming is listed player Linden Penner. Penner, an 18-year-old power forward who impressed as an invitee to the Calgary Flames’ development camp, is an intriguing potential addition, and he confirmed to the Calgary Herald he’ll be coming to Everett for training camp. He’s one player I’ll be keeping a close eye on.
