We must stop the ‘non-profit’ scam

Regarding the David Sirota column, “Tax-exempt NFL reflects our economic unfairness”: I became aware of this inequity some time ago when I read Sen. Coburn’s 2012 waste report. Since then I have asked numerous people if they are aware of the tax-exempt status of these mega-sports associations. Not one person has answered yes.

I have a profoundly disabled granddaughter who was born with a chromosome deletion and many other medical problems, including missing a part of her brain so she is nonverbal. Along with a few other families, my daughter-in-law started a nonprofit foundation to assist families with children born with this deletion, as well as to educate pediatricians to recognize it in newborns. No words can describe my outrage knowing that these billion-dollar corporations enjoy the same tax-exempt status as her tiny foundation. And, we as taxpayers are paying for it. You can bet that this is the tip of the iceberg regarding special favors and tax status to not only these entities, but many others.

The only way this will change is for all of us to contact our senators and representatives and demand a revision of the tax code. This issue is particularly critical as we face another debt-cealing increase.
