UW sweeps Alabama State in first round of NCAA tourney

SEATTLE — The University of Washington swept Alabama State in the opening round of the NCAA volleyball tournament, beating the Hornets 25-11, 25-5 and 25-16 on Friday night at Alaska Airlines Arena.

The Huskies (27-2) used their size and strength to their advantage in posting a 42-11 advantage in kills. Washington was led by outside hitter and Pacific-12 Conference Player of the year Krista Vansant who had 10 kills, six digs and three blocks. Monroe native Kylie Munoz contributed two kills and two blocks for the Huskies.

Washington advances to play LSU at 7 tonight after the Tigers rallied from being down 0-2 to stun Michigan in a five-set thriller. It’s the 12th consecutive year that the Huskies have advanced to the second round of the NCAA volleyball tournament.
