SEATTLE — A 17-year-old boy who was sitting between the rails of a railroad track was knocked aside when he was hit by a freight train.

The Bellingham Herald reported that he suffered serious injuries about 2 a.m. Sunday and was taken to a hospital.

Burlington Northern Santa Fe spokesman Gus Melonas says the train was traveling about 15 mph through the area west of the Bellingham city limits. He says the crew was sounding the horn when the boy was struck.
