OAK HARBOR — Jacob Jerome’s 13-yard touchdown run with just over three minutes remaining put Monroe ahead to stay in its 30-28 non-conference victory over Oak Harbor on Friday night.

Jerome, who had 101 yards on 18 carries and two touchdowns in the game, gave the Bearcats a 30-21 lead, but Oak Harbor answered with a 37-yard touchdown pass from Clay Doughty to Dylan Harris with 1:37 on the clock to cut it to a three-point Monroe lead.

Monroe recovered the Wildcats’ onside kick, but couldn’t get anything going offensively and was forced to punt.

Oak Harbor drove into Monroe territory with the clock winding down, but Monroe’s Alex Vidican sacked Doughty for the third time in the game to run out the clock for the Bearcats.

“Our defensive coordinator called a great game and our players did an excellent job of executing it,” Monroe coach Brett Jay said. “This win gets our program out on the right foot, and it was nice to see all the hard work we put in during the summer pay off in the fourth quarter.”

Jay said that Monroe’s ability to recover four Oak Harbor fumbles was the difference in the game.

Dejon Devroe had 181 rushing yards and two touchdowns for Oak Harbor.
