OTHELLO — Stanwood wrestling took first place in the Leonard Schutte Invitational Saturday, beating tournament rival Othello in front of their home crowd at At Pete Tagarres Gym.

“We dualed Othello the night before and got beat pretty handily,” Stanwood head coach Ray Mather said. “They won 11 weight classes and we won three and we turned around and beat them by 20 points. We rebounded really well.”

A total of nine Spartans wrestlers took podium finishes, and three of them topped their weight classes: Wes Weinert (145), Kane Ayling (152) and Arie Van Been (170).

“We’ve gotten second (in the tournament) the past two years and we’re happy to get over the hump and beat Othello.” Mather said.
