Prep Athletes of the Week — April 5 – 11

The athletes of the week are selected by The Herald staff with input from local head coaches.

Sara Johnson

Lake Stevens | Softball

The left-handed freshman pitcher entered last Tuesday’s game against Snohomish in the fourth inning and pitched three straight perfect innings before finally giving up a hit — the only one she allowed in the game — in the bottom of the seventh inning in a come-from-behind 4-3 win.

Jacob Hunnewell &Garrett Walsh

Meadowdale | Baseball

In a 17-7 win over Glacier Peak, teammates Jacob Hunnewell and Garrett Walsh drove in five runs apiece. Hunnewell was 4-for-5 with three doubles and a single, raising his batting average to .556. Walsh was 4-for-6 with a two-run home run, two singles and a double that pushed his average to .400. Walsh also earned the victory on the mound in a 7-3 victory over Glacier Peak.

Brandon Wright

Kamiak | Boys Soccer

Wright scored the game’s lone goal in a 1-0 win over Snohomish last Wednesday. It was the defending state champs’ first loss of the season.

Chris Diaz

Shorewood | Boys Track

Diaz won the 100-meter dash (11.22 seconds), 300 hurdles (40.53) and was a member of a winning 400 relay (44.98) to help lead Shorewood over Everett in a Wesco meet against the Seagulls and Cascade.

Sidney Trinidad

Arlington | Girls Track

The sophomore won the 100-meter dash in 12.99 seconds, the 400 run in 1 minute, 5.4 seconds and placed second in the long jump event behind teammate Jessica Ludwig to help lead Arlington to the victory over Mount Vernon.

Emmi Modahl &Natalie Mackey

Arlington | Girls Golf

The Arlington duo earned co-medalist honors, shooting a 49 to lead the Eagles to victory in a match against Cascade and Everett.

Emily Sandquist

Jackson | Girls Tennis

The Timberwolves’ No. 1 singles player dropped just one game in contests against Cascade and Mount Vernon, both of which Jackson won 6-1.

Justin Beretta

Everett | Boys Lacrosse

Beretta had five goals and an assist to lead Everett to a 15-2 win over Burlington-Edison on Friday. The win kept Everett undefeated this season and in a tie for first place with Stanwood and Kamiak.
