Woman of the Year finalist: Madison Schultz

The Edmonds-Woodway girls soccer team had plenty of weapons last fall, but there was no weapon more potent than Madison Schultz.
After going scoreless in her team’s first six games, Schultz scored 32 goals over the final 17 games, a stretch when the Warriors went undefeated on their way to the Class 3A state championship. Moreover, Schultz was at her best when it counted most, scoring seven goals in four state-playoff games, including four in the team’s semifinal and final matches, capped by the game-winner in a 2-1 victory over Southridge in the title game.
For all her contributions to Edmonds-Woodway’s championship season, Schultz was a finalist for The Herald’s Woman of the Year in Sports award.
It was, said Warriors coach Bill Lecompte in an interview last fall, “a great year” for Schultz. “She has the ability to be a difference maker in a game, hands down, without a doubt. … She just has a knack for being in the right spot on the field, of making an opportunity happen, and then of making the most of that opportunity.”
Schultz was a junior last fall, so she still has one more season with the Warriors. Then it will be off to the University of North Carolina, a women’s soccer power with 21 NCAA championships since 1982.
“I think the fact that she’s committed to North Carolina, the most storied program in the country, speaks volumes about what her upside is,” Lecompte said.
