EVERETT — The Vancouver Canadians’ losing streak is over.

Vancouver snapped a nine-game skid by defeating the Everett AquaSox 5-4 Wednesday night at Everett Memorial Stadium.

The score was tied 3-3 going into the eighth inning. In the top of the eighth Vancouver’s Carl Wise led off with a double, then slid home just under the tag following Sean Hurley’s single to center, giving the Canadians the lead. Vancouver tacked on an insurance run in the ninth when, with two out, Gabriel Cenas popped a triple into the left-field corner and scored on Andrew Guillotte’s single to right.

Everett rallied for a run in the bottom of the ninth, but was unable to tie it back up.

Guillotte finished with three hits and Justin Atkinson doubled twice to lead Vancouver (9-18). Brandon Hinkle earned the win on the mound with three scoreless innings of relief. Andrew Case tossed the final two innings to pick up his league-leading fifth save.

Jordan Cowan reached base five times and Logan Taylor doubled twice for Everett (17-10), which had a three-game winning streak snapped.

Vancouver was all over Everett starting pitcher Darin Gillies in the top of the first inning. Atkinson and Lane Thomas hit back-to-back RBI doubles to the wall, then Thomas came around on a pair of wild pitches, staking the Canadians to a 3-0 lead.

Everett clawed back with a run in the third and two more in the fourth. Cowan came home on a passed ball to get the Sox on the board in the third, then Taylor smacked a two-run double down the third-base line in the fourth, knotting the score at 3-3.

Gohara returns

Starting pitcher Luiz Gohara has rejoined the Sox. The 18-year-old phenom from Brazil was promoted to Clinton of the mid single-A Midwest League last weekend, but he’s back in Everett after making a spot start for the LumberKings. The left-hander took the loss in his start against Peoria on Monday, allowing two runs in 4 2/3 innings, walking five and striking out four.

Vargas gets a workout

Carlos Vargas, a big-money international signing by the Seattle Mariners earlier this month, spent Wednesday working out with the Sox. The 16-year-old shortstop from the Dominican Republic, who was listed by Baseball America as the 19th-ranked international prospect this year, signed for a reported $1,625,000. He was only scheduled to be in Everett on Wednesday.
