Silvertips add Austrian forward

The Silvertips made a move Tuesday as they claimed Austrian 18-year-old forward Dario Winkler. To make room the Tips waived injured defenseman Alexander Scherbakov. Winkler was Brandon’s second-round pick in the CHL import draft last year. Here is an article that appeared a month ago in the Brandon Sun that discusses Winkler’s efforts to win a roster spot.

Scherbakov never really got a chance to show what he could do since he got hurt in his first game.

Thursday is also the cut-down day for each team to settle on its three overage players. The Tips have already decided on Cole MacDonald, Remi Laurencelle and Carson Stadnyk, but the future of goaltender Austin Lotz remains up in the air. Lotz went home to Manitoba last week to wait out the overage deadline. The Tips are probably still trying to move him, but if they’re unable to do so he would go into the overage draft.

Elsewhere in the WHL:

Kamloops Blazers general manager Craig Bonner resigned his post and the organization named Stu MacGregor the new vice president and GM. The Blazers have yet to win a game this season.

Victoria goaltender Coleman Vollrath was named the CHL Goaltender of the Week. It was the second consecutive time he has been nominated for the award.
