Everett Silvertips fall to Spokane Chiefs and an Austin Lotz update

The Game

Head coach Kevin Constantine was worried about the complacency that can come with a winning streak, but that didn’t seem to be an issue in the first period. Everett out-shot Spokane 11-3 in the first stanza.

However, the killer was the fact the Silvertips couldn’t convert on their 5-on-3 chance that came midway through the first period. And, naturally a good number of those shots came during that span.

Following the scoreless first period the Chiefs assumed control as they out-shot Everett 29-13 the rest of the way. Carter Hart played very well at goaltender, but Spokane netminder Lasse Petersen was even better as the Dane recorded a shutout in his Chiefs debut.

The Tips let a chance to move into a second-place tie in the U.S. Division with the Chiefs slip away, while Spokane jumped into a first-place tie with Seattle following the victory.

Noah Juulsen got the night off after playing the past two nights for Team WHL at the CHL Canada-Russia Series. Kevin Davis joined Juulsen’s normal defensive partner Lucas Skrumeda to start on the blue line.

The Tips always get a lift with Juulsen’s presence both at even strength and in power play situations, so the impact of his absence cannot be overstated. Juulsen did block a puck in Monday’s game, but played Tuesday. I don’t believe his absence is indicative of any lasting effects, but I’ll check with the Tips staff at practice tomorrow.

The Turning Point

Spokane led 1-0 through the second period. However, the Chiefs garnered their second power play goal when Kolten Olynek snuck a top shelf effort past Hart at 12:10 in the final period to put the game all but out of reach.

Three Stars

1. Spokane G Lasse Petersen: Making his Spokane debut after being acquired from Calgary, Petersen stopped all 24 shots the Tips sent his way including a 5-on-3 situation in the first period.

2. Spokane C Curtis Miske: Miske scored the only goal the Chiefs needed with a wrist shot from the left circle late in the second period.

3. Everett G Carter Hart: The 17-year-old wunderkind recorded 30 saves in a losing effort.

The Box Score

An Austin Lotz Update

Sad news out of Medicine Hat, where it was announced that former Silvertip goaltender and fan favorite Austin Lotz will miss the remainder of his overage season as he undergoes season-ending shoulder surgery.
