SHORELINE — The Lynnwood girls basketball team rolled into the 3A District 1 Championship game with a 63-24 win over Stanwood in Wednesday’s semifinals.
The Royals (22-0) jumped out to a 25-6 lead after the first quarter and were never really challenged, setting up a meeting with undefeated Arlington (22-0) in Saturday’s district championship game and earning a berth in the state regional round.
The Spartans played without sophomore Kaitlin Larson, who was injured at practice earlier this week.
“That affected their game, their strategy and their depth,” Lynnwood head coach Everett Edwards said. “We came out playing very good defense. We kind of wanted to feel them out in the beginning to see how our pressure would work against them. It seemed like it was effective, so we just kind of kept it up until we got a lead and it was just a good solid defensive game for us.”
Senior guard Mikayla Pivec finished with a game-high 22 points to lead the Royals.
“Mikayla is her normal self,” Edwards said. “It’s a situation that had she played more in the second half, she could have scored 30. She’s playing well, but our team is also playing well and we’re finding Mikayla for a lot of shots. We just played really good team basketball.”
Stanwood remains alive in the tournament and will play a loser-out game against Shorewood on Friday.
The top-ranked Royals will face No. 3 Arlington for the championship on Saturday. Both teams have earned a spot in regionals, but with both teams being undefeated it will be the most anticipated game so far this season for either squad.
“We’ve played against coach Joe (Marsh) and the Eagles for two district championship,” Edwards said. “Out of the last four or five years, this is the third time we’re going to be playing for a district championship. Our coaches and our players are very excited. We know Arlington is going to be super-aggressive and they’re all great shooters. We can’t wait until Saturday.”
