The Game
Not a whole lot to say about this one. The Tips ran into a hot team with a hot goalie, and the result was their second shutout loss in their last three games.
Americans goaltender Evan Sarthou continued his torrid February pace with 33 saves to notch his second shutout of the month and improve to 5-1 with a 1.90 GAA and a .935 save percentage in February.
It wasn’t like the Tips made it easy on Sarthou. Everett registered nearly twice as many shots (33) as the Americans (17) and outshot Tri-City 15-1 in the final period.
Everett also didn’t help itself by allowing a shorthanded goal and a power play goal for Tri-City’s two tallies as special teams continue to be a challenge for the Tips.
Seattle beat Spokane 2-1 in overtime Friday night, so the Thunderbirds close to within three points in the standings. The good news for the Tips is that they play host to Seattle Saturday and can go back up five standings points. Everett has a 5-0-1 mark against the T-Birds this year. Seattle has won four in a row.
The Turning Point
The Tips had a 2-on-1 chance at 4:35 in the third and trailing 2-0. Sarthou stopped Carson Stadnyk’s shot to preserve the shutout and Everett’s best chance to that point.
Three Stars
1. Tri-City G Evan Sarthou: The Washington native had 33 saves for his second shutout of the season.
2. Tri-City F Mackenze Stewart: The overager scored a shorthanded goal that proved the game-winner.
3. Tri-City F Parker Bowles: The Americans’ leading scorer added some insurance on the power play early in the second period.
