Comics: May 7 is Free Comic Book Day. Participating comic book specialty shops around the planet give away comic books free to anyone who comes into their shops. This year’s free comics include a genre for everyone, from Archie and Pokemon to Doctor Who and Street Fighter. Go to www.freecomicbookday.com for a store near you.
Hisssss: Check out the Seattle Metro Reptile Expo from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 7 at the Evergreen State Fairgrounds in Monroe. The event is for those looking for a new reptile pet or equipment and for those simply interested in reptiles. There will be educational, hands-on exhibits as well as shows by the Reptile Man. $10 adults, $5 ages 6-12, 5 and under free; www.nwreptileexpos.com.
Fishing: A fishing derby starts at 8 a.m. May 7 at Jennings Memorial Park Kiwanis Pond, 6915 Armar Road, Marysville. For kids 12 and younger. Equipment available for those who don’t have it. Free, but bring a canned food item to donate to Marysville Food Bank. Pancake breakfast, $5, from 8 to 10 a.m.; 360-363-8400.
Tweet: Celebrate International Migratory Bird Day from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 7 at Brightwater Education Center in Bothell. There will be bird walks, arts and crafts, birding workshops, bird study skins to examine and more. Bird walks require advanced registration. islandwood.org/event/brightwater-feather-fest
Birds: Imagine Children’s Museum offers a Kid’s Bird Festival from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 7. Sarvey Wildlife will have raptors at the event. There will also be games, art activities and information tables. The event is sponsored by Pilchuck Audubon Society. Museum admission is $10; www.imaginecm.org.
Plants: Kids can create their own pot of colorful annual flowers, just in time for Mother’s Day, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 7 at the Edmonds Farmers Market, on Bell Street north of Fifth Avenue. $10 donation appreciated. There also will be a Children’s Fairy Flower Parade at noon, starting at the Edmonds Library.
Watershed fair: A Watershed Fun Fair is 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 7 at the Willow Creek Salmon Hatchery, 95 Pine St., Edmonds. The event includes exhibits, games, nature crafts and activities especially for kids including fish feeding and face painting. There also will be demonstrations on recycling, stormwater, creating wildlife habitat, rain gardens, tours of the native plant garden and fish hatchery. Touch-A-Truck: Kids can check out large vehicles, like excavators, semi-trucks and a double decker bus at the Port Susan Touch-A-Truck and Spring Fest from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 7 in downtown Stanwood. There will be at least 50 vehicles, a bouncy house, pee wee race, soap box derby cars and more; www.discoverportsusan.com.
Free: State parks will all be free, no Discover Pass required, on May 8.
Cougars: Learn about cougars in the Pacific Northwest at 7 p.m. May 12 at the Northwest Stream Center in McCollum Park, 600 128th St. SE, Everett. Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife cougar scientist Brian Kertson will make the presentation. For sixth graders to adults. $7; 425-316-8592 to register.
Orcas: Learn about Puget Sound orcas at 11 a.m. May 14 at the Northwest Stream Center. Killer Whale Tales will be presented by Jeff Hogan who is a professional biologist and photographer. $7; 425-316-8592 to register.
Bike donations: Sharing Wheels Community Bike Shop, 2531 Broadway Ave., Everett, is asking for donations of kids bikes for its Kid’s Bike Swap from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 12. Bikes with 20 inch and 24 inch wheels are especially needed. Donations earn credit for a larger bicycle; www.sharingwheels.org.
Stage
Music Musical storytime, Soundbridge Seattle Symphony Music Discovery Center, 200 University St., Seattle. Kids explore classic musical stories through games, song and dance in this 30-minute class, 10:30 a.m. Fridays. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., children can see, touch and play real instruments. Imagine Children’s Museum: 1502 Wall St., Everett. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays.
