Silvertips rally from 3-goal deficit, beat Portland in shootout

KENNEWICK — The Everett Silvertips erased an early three-goal deficit as they went on to defeat the Portland Winterhawks 5-4 in a shootout Thursday afternoon in the Tri-City Tournament at the Toyota Center.
Devon Skoleski converted Everett’s sixth shootout attempt as the Tips (2-2-1) prevailed after losing in overtime to Spokane on Wednesday.
Skyler McKenzie scored for Portland and Orrin Centazzo scored for Everett as the shootout was remained tied through three shots, setting up Skoleski’s game-winner.
The Tips wouldn’t have been in position to win had it not been for Brian King. The 17-year-old forward scored twice in the third period to tie the game at 4-4.
King’s first goal of the game at 4-3 at the 8:30 mark in the third and he tied the contest at 15:33.
Portland seemed poised to run away with the victory as the Winterhawks wasted no time creating separation early in the game.
Portland scored three times in the first eight minutes against Everett netminder Mario Petit.
Bronson Sharp started the barrage with an assist from McKenzie at 3:55 and Ty Kolle added the second goal at 7:03 with McKenzie and Tanner Nagel assisting.
Sharp’s second goal came at 7:34 with an assist form Colton Veloso.
The Tips reached the scoreboard late in the opening quarter when Connor Dewar scored his fourth goal in as many preseason games. Kyle Walker and Graham Millar assisted Dewar’s effort.
Portland pushed its lead back to three at 12:24 in the second when Evan Weinger found the net.
Eetu Tuulola scored his second goal and his second power-play goal of the preseason with assists from Matt Fonteyne and Kevin Davis at 17:58 in the second to cut the deficit to 4-2 and set up King’s third-period heroics.
Petit saved 30 of the 34 shots he faced to earn the win. Millar finished with three assists.
The Tips conclude the preseason with a home-and-home series with the Seattle Thunderbirds next week Friday and Saturday.
