Rotary highlights CTE students, teacher

The Alderwood-Terrace Rotary Club sponsors the Career and Technical Student of the Month program at Lynn-wood High School. Teachers choose students in career and technical education classes for the honors. Honorees for September and October were, respectively, senior Rebecca Toby for law and justice and sophomore Jillian Cummings for photography and video production.

The Rotary also recognizes outstanding teachers and staff each month.

The September Educator of the Month was Nina Franklin, a teacher at Brier Terrace Middle School. “Nina is the type of colleague who inspires her peers to be better and to think big,” Principal Alex Alexander said.

The October Educator of the Month was Sandy Engel, a music teacher at Hazelwood Elementary School. “In her classrooms, she has consistently established calm, caring, focused environments for student learning,” Principal Tim Parnell said.

Teacher will help make ‘makerspaces’

Local teacher Angie O’Malley, from Brighton School in Mountlake Terrace, was recently among 20 educators selected worldwide for the Stanford FabLearn Fellowship program.

The yearlong program will bring the teachers together to create open-source materials and ideas for “Fab Labs,” or fabrication laboratories, where students learn through hands-on, project-based creating.

O’Malley has worked at Brighton School for more than nine years and helped develop the school’s STEAM Lab, a “makerspace” that incorporates science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics and is equipped with a 3D printer, sewing machine, MacBooks, iPads, prototyping materials, a vinyl cutter and a range of craft materials.
