Sore winners, threats after election alarming

Published 1:30 am Thursday, December 1, 2016

The sentiments expressed by those who support the recent presidential election results ranged from amusing to alarming in Tuesday’s Opinion section. One letter writer moans over and over again about the “lying mainstream media” (apparently, there are sore winners as well as sore losers) and their unfair treatment of their candidate, when the candidate himself, repeatedly, publicly, and unmistakably, made these statements and gestures. There was no media conspiracy beyond simply reporting the candidate’s arrogantly outrageous and insulting expressions. Another writer viciously attacks the free press, calling it “left-wing propaganda” and “non-stop liars” and implying that “…the next time it won’t be so peaceful.”

One of these Trump supporters then trotted out a quote from JFK about the inevitability of violent revolution when peaceful revolution is made impossible. Ironically, that just happens to be how Fidel Castro came to power. Once his violent revolution was successful, he then became an autocratic dictator, forcefully silencing the critical press and following through on deadly threats against those who opposed or criticized him.

We just might need that revolution after all.
