City Hall update: The city of Mountlake Terrace is accepting architectural bids for its new City Hall. Submissions are due Jan. 17. A ballot measure on the project, with input from an advisory committee, is expected in late 2017. More info: www.cityofmlt.com/1903.

Women’s firearms class: The Camano Island Library plans a class, “Women and Firearms and Personal Safety: Be Safer in the New Year,” from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan 7. A local expert will share knowledge about choosing self-defense options and what to know before carrying a gun. There will be opportunities to handle different firearms. Fire department future: Camano Island Fire and Rescue plans two public meetings to share information about the department’s long-term plans and the challenges facing emergency services. The meetings are set for 10 a.m. Jan 7 at Camano Center, 606 Arrowhead Road, and 7 p.m. Jan. 9 at department headquarters, 811 N. Sunrise Boulevard. The department’s 911 call volume has increased by about a third in recent years, according to the department’s December newsletter. The newsletter is a new addition aimed at reaching more people.
