Hart picks up second win, Juulsen adds assist at WJC in Toronto

Team Canada improved to 3-0-0-0 at World Juniors Thursday with a 10-2 win over Latvia in pool play to qualify for the quarterfinal knockout round.

Everett goaltender Carter Hart once again got the start in net and saved 23 of the 25 shots he faced. In terms of numbers it was a better performance than he turned in against Russia in a 5-3 Canada victory in the WJC opener.

Hart saved all 10 shots in what was a busier-than-expected first period. He also saved one shot with his throat protector. I believe Hart added that piece of equipment after he took that shot off the collar bone back on Feb. 27 against the Seattle Thunderbirds at ShoWare Center.

However, Hart did give up a pair of goals once the game was well in hand. There was some predictable hand-wringing and teeth-gnashing on Twitter afterward:

It will be interesting to see who starts in net against the United States on New Year’s Eve.

Noah Juulsen, Everett’s other WJC representative, had an assist in the game when his shot was tipped in by Taylor Raddysh who finished with four goals in the rout.

Speaking of Juulsen, Hockey Canada had this story that looks at his journey from getting cut from last year’s roster to playing big minutes this year.

I agree with Juulsen that flights from mainland Europe to North America’s west coast are interminable. I can only imagine how much longer it must seem after seeing your childhood dream shattered.

Speaking once again of Juulsen, this photo was also posted on Twitter earlier Thursday and needs to be shared:

Lastly, Hart and Juulsen got together to film this spot entitled “Him or Me?” It’s well worth your time to watch if you haven’t seen it already.

In other news:

– The Tips didn’t skate today as they will play their third game in four nights Friday when Prince George returns to Xfinity Arena for the final time. The Cougars and Silvertips have battled back and forth for the top spot in the Western Conference for much of the season, but Everett has beaten Prince George all three times the teams have matched up.

– In Friday’s paper I examine how the Tips are succeeding defensively despite the collective youth of the blue line group.
