EVERETT — A burn ban has been issued for Snohomish and Pierce counties.

The air has been stagnant and pollution levels are higher than normal, according to the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency. The agency called for a Stage 1 burn ban starting at noon Sunday. The ban is set to last until air quality improves, which could be soon as rain and wind are expected early this week.

During the ban, no burning is allowed in fireplaces, fireplace inserts or uncertified wood stoves. Outdoor fires are prohibited. Burning is allowed for homeowners who have received an exemption from the agency because they do not have another adequate source of heat.

Violating a burn ban can lead to a $1,000 fine.
