Silvertips assistant Brennan Sonne headed to France?

It appears that Everett Silvertips assistant coach Brennan Sonne is headed to France.

There has been no confirmation from the Everett Silvertips, but I stumbled across this tweet Saturday morning:

I don’t speak French, but Google Translate indicates this says that he will be the head coach of Les Ducs d’Angers in the Ligue Magnus, the top men’s hockey league in France.

Once again, the Tips have yet to confirm the news and I only saw because it was retweeted by the Silvertips Alumni account (worth a follow for all Tips fans).

If Sonne does take the job, it will be his second coaching foray abroad as he previously served as head coach at the Meco Hockey Academy in Hong Kong during the 2013-14 season. There he managed all aspects of the program while helping develop players ranging in ages 5-14.

Responsible for the Everett power play and the forwards during his coaching stint, Sonne brought a high level of energy and personable demeanor to the organization while he worked closely with Darren Parsons, the team’s academic coordinator to ensure the high-school age players succeeded in school.

A native of Maple Ridge, B.C., Sonne played parts of three season with the Tips from 2005-08 before concluding his WHL career with stops in Red Deer and Edmonton. He then played three seasons at the University of British Columbia while earning his degree in sociology.

Les Ducs are the same French team coached both by former Everett Silvertips head coach Kevin Constantine and former Tips assistant and associate head coach Jay Varady. Tips goaltending coach Shane Clifford has also served as goalie coach for the Ducs, so there are Everett connections aplenty in Angers.

Sonne would become the second of Everett’s three coaches from this past season not to return as Constantine’s contract was not renewed Tuesday. Tips general manager Garry Davidson expressed the desire to retain Sonne and fellow assistant Mitch Love when I spoke to him on Tuesday, so we’ll see how what direction that goes in the coming weeks.
