Big inning helps Edmonds CC baseball team split with Everett

MOUNT VERNON — One big inning kept the Edmonds Community College baseball team from experiencing a totally lost weekend.

The Tritons scored five times in the top of the fifth inning Sunday and went on to beat Everett 6-3 in the second game of their Northwest Athletic Conference doubleheader.

In the opener, Everett stretched its win streak to 10 games with a 3-2 victory.

The comeback by Edmonds denied Everett a sweep of the four-game weekend series. The Trojans won both games Saturday, 6-2 and 8-2.

Edmonds trailed 3-0 entering the fifth inning of Sunday’s nightcap, but a run-scoring single by Owen Breithhaupt sparked the decisive rally.

The Tritons added their other runs on a wild pitch, an error, a fielder’s choice and an RBI single by Zach Needham.

Once Edmonds grabbed the lead, its bullpen took over. Lucas Ford and Riley Storedahl combined to shut out Everett the rest of way on just three hits. Starting pitcher Jimmy Boyce, a freshman from Auckland, New Zealand, earned the win. He allowed one earned run over five innings and struck out four.

In the first game Sunday, Everett broke a 2-2 tie with a run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Dylan Boomer delivered a clutch two-out double to score Peyton Cordova-Smith, who had reached base on an error.

Starting pitcher Dalton Chapman earned the win for Everett. He went seven innings, allowing three hits, two runs and striking out five.

Freshman Mack Larson collected the save by pitching a scoreless ninth.

Edmonds (24-9) and Everett (28-8) came into the four-game weekend series ranked Nos. 1 and 3, respectively, in the latest NWC coaches poll.

Sunday’s games were played at the Dream Field in Mount Vernon because of soggy field conditions in Everett.
